Our wolfpack
Christopher was born in Aspen in 1986. His hospital room window was visited every day by a doe - he was a fortunate son of the Elk Mountains. Chris’s spirit animal is the wolf – a strong, loyal protector like this reluctant warrior.
Chris drew his strength from mountains - he grew up in fields of sage, Ponderosas and Aspen; he climbed every 14’er in the Elk Range. In his adult life, he found peace and joy in the Bridger Range, touring backcountry with his dogs, and patrolling at Bridger and Big Sky.
Friends were at the center of his world. Once you were Chris’s friend, it was a bond for life. Chris stayed in touch with his friends from every era of his life; there was no distance between them when they would meet again. Loyalty and Christopher were synonymous.
Christopher was a protector. After enduring bullying at school, he had a revelation to fight back and never stop. He hated bullies all his life and would stand up in defense of himself or his friends. As tough as Chris was, he always kept the most tender heart.
Christopher joined the Marines in 2005. His determination, discipline and resolve triumphed over a debilitating back injury, and he served three combat tours over eight years. Through rigorous training, and steadfast commitment, Chris succeeded in his ambition to become a Reconnaissance Marine.
Christopher achieved two STEM college degrees after his time in the Marines. Chris wanted to become a trauma surgeon in war torn countries – combining all his education, training and focus. Chris never did anything halfway.
Christopher delivered medical supplies in Ukraine and later joined an elite military detachment. He tragically perished on his last mission. Chris never intended for his life to end on a battlefield. He met the woman of his dreams, gave his life fully to a country fighting for freedom, and was surrounded by the love of family, friends and his beloved marines to the end. After a lifetime of fighting, many believed Christopher was invincible. We howl at the moon in his memory.
Congratulations to Sgt Christopher “Mowgli” Black on living life according to this creed. He served six combat tours and left an unparalleled legacy of valor, honor and leadership.
